EVENTS & FELLOWSHIP |
Ice Cream, YES! Visitors & New Friends, YES! But wait … there’s more! Join us after Worship in the shade of the oaks (or cool from the A/C in the sanctuary by the French doors) on August 6 for a Back to School Ice Cream Social! We’ll have ice cream, toppings (including whipped cream), and sodas for floats. PLUS, lawn-sized Jenga and cornhole! We are welcoming passersby on Swann, as well as meeting many of the students and their parents from Apollo Academy that will start school here next week. Please plan to stay to bid a fond farewell to Ilma, welcome our new Interim Children’s Director Faith Pilafas, and meet our new Apollo Academy friends. This will be a special time of wishing all children a hearty “Happy Back to School,” and enjoy fun fellowship as a church family. |
Welcome Apollo Academy! HPPC is excited to partner with Apollo Academy, as we welcome them as our brand new tenant! This week, Apollo moved into our Building! They are being housed downstairs in four rooms: The Learning Center, Rooms #112, #114 and #116. We have been working with Apollo’s Founder and Director Beth Ann Valavanis. She and her family have been visiting our church for months now, and we are looking forward to this new partnership. Apollo Academy is a K-6 private school with a framework and environment that prioritizes mastery of foundational curriculum, while providing children with the freedom to make their own decisions, explore at their will, and define who they want to be. Apollo Academy is part of a network of more than 250 Acton Academy Affiliates and they’ll instruct students at HPPC Monday through Friday. Please welcome staff, students, and families if you see them! (See last article for more information.) |
Vacation Bible School Fabulous Fun! Vacation Bible School was a great success. A personal thank you to llma for all her hard work and organizational skills, and for the special relationships she formed with the children and Cedarkirk staff. I also want to thank the members who contributed snacks, lunches, dinners and gift cards! We were able to save money on this week because of your generosity. Next Sunday, August 6 will be llma’s last Sunday with us. I hope you are able to say your good-byes to her sometime this week. We are going to miss her very much. Thank you, Chris Bosworth, Christian Ed Committee |

CHURCH NEWS |
Ilma De La Rosa, HPPC Children’s Ministry Director, is embarking on a new adventure. Ilma will be leaving sunny Florida to pursue a new full-time adventure in a more chilly climate. She has said she will miss all of us, especially each one of our precious children, along with our beautiful sunsets over the water. In 2021 Ilma De La Rosa joined the staff of Hyde Park Presbyterian Church as the Children’s Ministry Director. To this position she brought a Master’s Degree in Family Ministry, excellent skills and an incredibly loving and caring demeanor shared with both children and adults. Her contribution to the children and families of our church has been very significant. Results of a survey completed by the congregation last year identified Ilma and her program for our children from infancy through 5th grade as the most positive feature of our church. Faith Pilafas will be our Interim Children’s Director. She has met many of the children during Sunday School and Vacation Bible School and is excited to work with them. |
Love Gift for Ilma If you would like to contribute to a Love Gift for Ilma, please designate Love Gift in the blank form on a check made to HPPC, or choose Love Gift from the FUND dropdown on Church Center or EasyTithe on the website. And share a hug or story at the Ice Cream Social. Or CLICK HERE |
HPPC friends scored Rays hats and a fun afternoon of fellowship. HPPC baseball fans enjoyed a cool afternoon of summer baseball in the Trop in July. The Rays’ Arozarena’s game-tying single in the bottom of the 8th got the fans’ attention, but the Orioles scored in the 9th, winning by one. Next Fellowship Event: Ice Cream Social Sunday 8/6 and WWJJD in September. |
Fulfilling Our Mission The Session is pleased to welcome our third community group to be housed in our building. In addition to serving as the home to END 68 Hours of Hunger, and Thornwell’s Building Families program with certified family specialist Noelle Miller on site, we now welcome Apollo Academy to our fold. It has been a priority to the Session to utilize our building, as good stewards of God’s resources, to be the light and love of Christ in action in our community. As we move forward, we continue to seek additional opportunities to share our space with other groups and organizations. |
