What Would John Jr. Drink at 5:30 on Sept. 30th?
Join him for a widely educational and enjoyable evening!
This Saturday! John Brannan, Jr., is a professional brewer at Green Bench Brewing in St. Petersburg, so he has much knowledge (and beer) to share. The event will be hosted by Kim Brannan, ever the teacher of all things church-y, who will enlighten us as to the history of beer in the lives of Monks and the Church.
The event is at Kim’s home, 5013 S Elberon St., 33611 (south of Gandy, near Bayshore). Parking is limited; please consider Uber or carpooling with friends!
Register soon on Church Center, or mark it on the Welcome Pad at church!

SUNDAY
In Person Worship & Communion in the Sanctuary at 10 am Rev. Scott Moncrieff, guest pastor
J. Scott Moncrieff has sand in his shoes: his parents moved to Florida while he was in High School. He graduated from Stetson University (DeLand) with a Bachelors of Business Administration and Louisville Presbyterian Theological Seminary with a Masters of Divinity. While an Associate Pastor of Westminster Presbyterian in Lakeland, he met and married Suzanne Sebring, an Elder for that congregation. They will have been married 51 years on December 2. Sue and Scott have two children — a daughter, Jenny, married to James and a son, James, married to Jenny. They each have two children, all in college.
Scott was Head Pastor of Christ Presbyterian Church, Ormond Beach for 30 years. He has since worked as Interim Pastor for several churches in Florida and North Carolina with Sue at his side. He is scheduled to preach most Sundays in October and November.
Classes for Children and Adults follow Worship. Adult Class Oct. 1: “Autoworkers Strike Against Big Three Automakers Continues.” Join us for a discussion sparked by The Wired Word and Biblical references in the Meeting Room down by the office.
CHURCH NEWS
Congregational Meeting Recap:
Elder Nominating Committee Elected
As we awaited the arrival of Rev. John Houghton to moderate the Congregational Meeting on Sept. 24, 2023, we heard a Leadership Transition Update led by chair Brian Malek. There are handouts in the Sanctuary foyer if you would like a copy (or contact Ann Orand in the office).
After declaring a quorum and opening with prayer, the following people were placed in nomination for the Elder Nominating Committee: Nancy Corwin and Harriet Plyler from the Session; Josh Crum, Brad Freeman and Lynda Waters. A suggestion was made to include Dwight Plyler as a youth delegate. As there were no more nominations from the floor, the slate was elected, and the meeting adjourned.
Send in your suggestions of those for the Nominating Committee to consider for serving as members of the new board of elders. Email the elder2@hydeparkpres.comNominating Committee at elder2@hydeparkpres.com.
New Programs for our Children
There is now a Time for Children in the Worship Service prior to the Sermon, after which the children will be “sherpherded out”, usually by Faith Pilafas, our interim children’s director, for some singing and a short program.
Children 4th grade and up have a new Sunday School Class with Harriet Plyler. They are reading Bible stories, and writing their own play to act out. Hopefully all of us will get to enjoy their creative work!
Those children starting Kindergarten moved up to their new Sunday School class, too.
A big Thank You to Faith, Gabby and Izzy who take such good care of our nursery little ones and children! Want to periodically help out if needed? See Faith or Chris Bosworth, CE chair, and volunteer!
Thoughts from last week’s message from Matthew 20:1-16
When we work, He feeds us.
God is not fair.
Is He just? Yes.
Is He generous? Yes.
The service closed with the Hymn “Immortal, Invisible, God Only Wise.”
She doesn’t know it’s a statue and doesn’t even know how much it weighs! She only saw a person who needed help. Look at the world with the heart of a child and life will become more beautiful every single time.
Jesus said, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.” -Matthew 19:14
